Editor’s Note: 46 year old Tom Ufert of Haltom City, Texas was on his way toward a political career and had everything in the world going for him. In baseball, if you make three strikes, you’re out. But in life there is no set amount of tragedy you can have in your life and still be successful. Ufert has written the soon to be published book, “Adversity Builds Character – A Second Chance,” in which he describes three major disabilities that he’s had to deal with in the last 20 years. Part 5 of a 5 part series.

Tom Ufert’s life has been riddled with difficulty, disappointment, pain and discouragement. But, he’s never accepted the idea of, “I can’t.” He’s discovered there are many things he can do to help and inspire others, and that’s his mission. Ufert explains, “My book, ‘Adversity Builds Character – A Second Chance,’ will be published this fall. My purpose for writing this book is to give people hope and inspiration and to show them that they can survive – no matter what type of adversity comes their way.” Ufert believes that one not only gets a second chance, but that every time you fail, every time you have a disappointment, every time you face adversity, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll always have another opportunity to try again.

He also believes the saying, “This is the last straw,” is untrue. There’s always another way out, another way to succeed, another way to give back and another way to help mankind, if you only search for that next chance. In his book, he explains how hard times, troubles and physical handicaps can make you stronger rather than weaker, when you begin to consider what you can do instead of what you can’t do. Through his writing, Ufert wants to show and explain how to see the cup always as half-full instead of half-empty. His life has been an example of rebounding from tragedy. Ufert explains, “We’re hoping for a release of the book in either mid or late fall of 2012. To know more about my book, go to my website at www.tomufert.com.”

Part 4 of a 5 part series.

After Tom Ufert did 2 and a half years of outpatient physical therapy, he discovered hippotherapy, the use of the movement of a horse as a medical tool. The horse’s gait provides sensory input through movement. “This was some of the best therapy I ever had,” Ufert says. “There’s an agency in Keller, Texas called the Rocky Top Therapy Center. They deal primarily with children who have cancer and cerebral palsy. But, they also have a physical therapy program for adults. I learned that when you’re riding on the back of a horse, your lower extremities perform many of the same motions that you would perform if you were walking, because of the movement of the horse. I continued this type of therapy for about 2 and a half years.”

Later Ufert was laid off by the insurance company and he worked for a mail order pharmaceutical corporation before learning he was HIV positive. Next, he went to work for a home security company. All the jobs he’d held had been in the area of customer service. He would talk to the customers on the phone and deal with any problems that they might have. However, after 2 years, the doctors recommended that he quit working.

Not willing to just sit at home and do nothing, Ufert has written his book, “Adversity Builds Character – A Second Chance,” and does fundraising for different charities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He’s also volunteers for the only AIDS hospice program in north Texas. Too, he’s returned to his roots and volunteered to work on a U.S. Senate campaign for a local politician. Ufert has discovered what many others already have learned – you always can find some form of work and a way to serve society, even if you can’t work. Ufert volunteers what time and energy he has to reach out and help others and to stay active. He gives up his time and talents for other people. He refuses to sit at home and to let the world pass him by. Even though his disabilities prevent him from being employed, he has found ways to use the talents and skills he has to make life better for those around him. He’s never given up his search for a meaningful way to have a positive influence on those in his community. With his book “Adversity Builds Character – A Second Chance,” he wants to extend his reach to bring a message of hope to many who believe they are in hopeless situations.
