Friends Helping Friends

When you have a spinal cord injury, one of the best things you can do for your mental well being is to get to know people in similar situations. It is important to have someone who knows what you’re going through and can help you deal with things that able-bodied friends and family just aren’t able to. That is why LASCI exists. Even though your LASCI friends may be hundreds of miles away, they will still be there to answer your questions and offer support and help whenever you need it. And we love it when two friends from different cities come together in person for support and therapy!

Leslie using Bert’s standing frame

Leslie Ostrander had been wanting to make the journey from Columbus, GA, to Atlanta to visit Project Walk for a long time. She sold books, asked for donations and prayers to help allow her to make her “Project Walk Journey”, and last week, her prayers were answered! On Leslie’s first day at Project Walk, she was accompanied by LASCI and UroMed founder, Bert Burns. Bert acted as peer counselor and support, and after the session, the two returned to Bert’s house where he trained Leslie on all of his cool gadgets including his standing frame and bottoms up bar.

This is just the beginning of Leslie’s journey at Project Walk, but we were thankful Bert was there as a friend on her first day. We love when friends are able to come together for a common goal.

LASCI On The Road: San Antonio

LASCI recently visited two facilities in San Antonio: Rolling Inspiration and Beyond the Chair. Here are some pictures from our visit!

Rolling Inspiration

Christopher Salas was injured in 1997. Since then, he has been awarded volunteer of the year at Warm Springs Rehab and inducted onto their Wall of Fame. He has been a mentor to the newly injured throughout the city of San Antonio for many years. He is also working with the Alamo Colleges on making them all more accessible for people with all disabilities. He coaches, recruits and plays for the new STRAPS Soccer program for those with disabilities. He is the starting goalie for the 2012 championship team.  While doing all these things, he also is a full time student with a 4.0 GPA who was just asked and accepted into Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Christopher does not lead authoritatively but by example and is the true definition of Rolling Inspiration!

Rolling inspiration was started in 2010 with only 4 members and has blossomed to over 30 members. Our mission is to get people to stop existing and start living. Last year we had members participating in things from visiting Sea World to waterskiing and even surfing. We continue to grow and help individuals thrive instead of just survive. Rolling Inspiration was recently honored as the 2012- 2013 organization of the year by the United Way and was just awarded a grant from the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.
